FAQ

What is a FIRE number?

Your FIRE number is the amount of savings you need to cover your annual expenses indefinitely using a safe withdrawal rate. With the standard 4% rule, your FIRE number is 25 times your annual expenses.

What is the 4% rule?

The 4% rule states that you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio in the first year of retirement, then adjust for inflation each year, and your savings should last at least 30 years. It is based on the Trinity Study of historical market returns.

What are the different types of FIRE?

Lean FIRE targets minimal expenses for the earliest retirement. Regular FIRE maintains a comfortable standard of living. Fat FIRE aims for a more affluent retirement lifestyle. The type you choose affects your FIRE number significantly.
