Frequently Asked Questions

What do the guide lines represent?

The guide lines consist of four key positions: the ascender line (top), the waist line (x-height top), the baseline (where most letters sit), and the descender line (bottom). The space between the waist and baseline is the x-height, which determines the height of lowercase letters. A midline divides the x-height for additional guidance.

What are the script presets?

Three presets are available: Italic (5 nib widths x-height, 5-degree slant), Copperplate (5 nib widths, steeper 8-degree slant, taller ascenders), and Gothic/Blackletter (5 nib widths, no slant, wider nib). Each preset automatically configures all parameters for that script style. You can also choose Custom to set every parameter manually.

How do slant lines work?

When enabled, slant lines are drawn at the specified angle across each line group. They help maintain consistent letter slant when writing. The slant angle can be set from 0 degrees (vertical) to 15 degrees. Italic script typically uses 5 degrees, while copperplate uses 8 degrees.

What nib width should I use?

The nib width depends on your calligraphy pen. Broad-edge pens commonly range from 1 mm to 5 mm. For beginners, a 2 mm nib is a good starting point. The x-height is calculated as the nib width multiplied by the nib-width count (e.g., 2 mm nib x 5 = 10 mm x-height).
